Vida de imigrante: Comidas típicas e curiosas da Escócia

Quando descobri que moraria na Escócia fiquei com aquela sensação de desespero pela falta de tempero nas comidas que todos nos alertam sobre, afinal como uma boa brasileira que sou, comida bem temperada é uma necessidade básica não é mesmo? Mas apesar de ter dado de cara com muita comida sem tempero e muito apimentada ( qual é o negócio que europeus tem com comida indiana e tailandesa?), me surpreendi bastante com os sabores da culinária escocesa.

A comida escocesa tem como essência um sabor marcante, não muito pelo tempero em si, mas pelo tipo de coisa que eles comem, que em alguns casos não são para ao estômago de qualquer um, rs, mas que dá o diferencial ao resto do Reino Unido.
Gosto que eles têm a mesma pegada de comidinha caseira que curtimos tanto no Brasil.

O lado negativo, mas que acredito, pelas viagens que já fiz, ser um problema europeu, é que eles curtem muita fritura e batata, então temos que tomar cuidado com a saúde e balança. É fácil cair em tentação com a quantidade de junk food que sai dessas duas combinaçōes, rs.

Resolvi fazer uma lista com as comidas mais curiosas, saborosas e esquisitas que comi ou ouvi falar. Com toda certeza não chega perto de toda a culinária que a Escócia tem para oferecer, até porque não tenho nem um ano morando aqui ainda, mas já dá para ter uma idéia considerando as pesquisas que fiz para esse post.

Haggis

Não tinha como começar sem ser pelo prato mais famoso e contraditório, o Haggis.
Digo isso porque se você tiver um estômago digamos, delicado, talvez seja melhor experimentar sem ler as informaçōes abaixo, porque o sabor é maravilhoso! E olha que quem tá dizendo isso é uma frescurenta de carteirinha, sério!
Basicamente o Haggis consiste em pedaços triturados de pulmão, coração e fígado de carneiro, com farinha de aveia para dar uma liga, dentro de um “saquinho”, tipo o da linguiça, que antigamente era feito do próprio estômago do animal, mas hoje em dia, por questōes de higiene e ajustes ao futuro é usado um invólucro artificial.
Demorou para eu conseguir ler sobre o que era feito, porque eu realmente amo esse prato, mas quando tomei coragem de ler a paixão já estava no meu coração e hoje eu como mesmo com aquela vozinha na minha cabeça tentando me avisar que é bem nojento rs.

Lorne Sausage

A Lorne sausage (ou Square sausage, Sliced sausage) é um mix de carne moida, suino e bovino, gordura e temperos.
É bastante famoso nos cafés da manhã, o famoso Full Scottish Breakfast (versão escocesa do Full English Breakfast) ou com os pãezinhos tipo de hambúrguer que eles chamam de roll.
Eu sinceramente não achei nada demais, ainda mais que eles gostam de comer no roll sem nenhum molho, manteiga, nada. Fica super seco e aí haja café pra ajudar a engolir sem engasgar, rs.

Deep fried Mars bar

Sim! Se o nome te lembrou uma barra de chocolate é exatamente isso que é! hahaha! Mas se você quiser comer como um escocês pega essa barra, passe numa farinha tipo de rosca e frite. Simples e direto, rs. A farinha que eles usam aqui é a mesma que usam para o famoso prato inglês, fish and chips (peixe e fritas).
Não estava brincando quando falei da quantidade de fritura que eles comem aqui… rs. E se você é amante de chocolate, com certeza vai amar!

Stovies

Stovies é um prato de sobras. Você pega batata (lembra da batata que falei lá em cima?) e um resto de carne, moída, assada, tanto faz, com alguns vegetais para complementar a seu critério, e voilà! Simples e com aquela carinha de comfort food, ou também de quem tá com preguiça de cozinhar… rsrs.

Scotch pie

Como a foto deixa bem claro é uma torta, duh! que de cara pode parecer nada demais, mas eles usam uma massa parecida com a do croissant, que mesmo eu que não curto croissant acho que fica perfeita para essa torta. E os recheios podem ser dos mais variados, o que eu mais gosto é o de rim de boi, aquela sabor bem forte e característico da Escócia.

Rowies (Buttery)

Os rowies são aqui do fundo do meu quintal, direto de Aberdeen, cidade onde vivo, e também são conhecidos como Aberdeen rolls.
São pães com uma massa que também lembra a do croissant, mas com um sabor mais salgado, e são super gostosos de comer com geléia e manteiga.

Finnan haddie

O Finnan haddie é o peixe haddock defumado com especiarias típicas daqui, e que pode ser comido com torradas, com molho tipo um cozido e por aí vai.
Tenho que dizer que ainda não experimentei primeiro: porque sou meio chata com frutos do mar, não como todos e nem de todas as formas que são feitos, e segundo: porque as opções que encontrei em cardápios achei no mínimo estranhas as combinações, rs. Mas o povo realmente gosta, principalmente aqui em Aberdeen, que é uma cidade de pesca.

Irn Bru

O Irn Bru não é comida, mas precisava entrar no fim dessa lista porque é basicamente o xodó da nação, rs.
É nada mais nada menos que um refrigerante, mas que eles amam tanto, que chega até a ser mais famoso que a Coca Cola por aqui… #chocada.
Nao gosto de refrigerantes, mas as pessoas que conheço e bebem dizem ter um sabor parecido com tutti frutti, o que só piora o sabor na minha cabeca, hahaha.
Recentemente a empresa que fabrica o Irn Bru avisou que seria feito uma modificação na fórmula do refrigerante, para diminuir o nível de açúcar, e foi uma loucura! As pessoas resolveram fazer estoques dos antigos lotes e reclamaram muito no Twitter, ouvi até falarem sobre abaixo assinado…

Para finalizar deixo um assunto polêmico: aqui eles amam o prato americano mac and cheese (macarrão com queijo), mas o amor é tão forte que eles não param por aí. Eles usam o prato para colocar de recheio em pizzas, para ingrediente extra de hambúrguer, torta, sanduíches e o que mais eles consigam pensar… é bizarro!
Aqui em Aberdeen tem um restaurante especializado em queijo quente, o Melt, que tem o queijo quente de mac and cheese, e eu simplesmente não consegui segurar a curiosidade e experimentei…e não é que é bem gostoso?
Ainda nao tive coragem de comer a pizza, a torta e o hambúrguer, mas mais por medo de gostar do que por achar nojento… hahahaha.
